Mia Turner: Let's start with the big picture. Why should our Level 4 and 5 Law students care about EU Law today, especially post-Brexit?

Eun-ji Choi: That's a great question. Even after Brexit, EU Law remains incredibly relevant. Think about it - UK companies still trade with the EU, citizens' rights are still being negotiated, and many UK laws originated from EU directives. Understanding EU Law is like having a master key to international legal practice.

Mia Turner: Fascinating. So it's not just about the past, but very much about the present and future. Could you walk us through three core concepts that our students will explore in this unit?

Eun-ji Choi: Absolutely. First, we have the principle of supremacy. This means that EU law takes precedence over national laws of member states. It's a fundamental concept that shapes how legal systems interact across Europe.

Mia Turner: That sounds powerful. How does that work in practice?

Eun-ji Choi: Well, imagine a UK law conflicting with an EU regulation before Brexit. The EU law would prevail. Even now, this principle affects how we interpret retained EU law. The second key concept is direct effect, which allows individuals to invoke EU law before national courts.

Mia Turner: So it's not just about governments talking to governments?

Eun-ji Choi: Exactly. It empowers citizens and businesses. The third concept is state liability - member states can be held financially responsible for damages caused by failing to implement EU law correctly.

Mia Turner: Those are some heavy concepts. Could you share a memorable scenario that brings this to life?

Eun-ji Choi: Let me tell you about the famous Factortame case. Spanish fishermen were challenging the UK's Merchant Shipping Act because it prevented them from fishing in UK waters. The case went all the way to the European Court of Justice.

Mia Turner: What happened?

Eun-ji Choi: The ECJ ruled that UK courts could suspend the application of national legislation if it conflicted with EU law. This was revolutionary! It showed how EU law could directly impact national legal systems and protect individual rights.

Mia Turner: That's a powerful example. How does understanding these principles help our students in their future careers?

Eun-ji Choi: Whether they become solicitors, barristers, or work in-house, they'll encounter EU law's legacy. Maybe they'll advise a company on product standards that originated from EU directives. Or perhaps they'll handle a case involving cross-border employment rights. The principles we've discussed form the foundation of so much commercial and human rights law.

Mia Turner: That makes perfect sense. What's one practical takeaway you'd like our students to remember from this unit?

Eun-ji Choi: Always consider the European dimension. Even in domestic cases, there might be an EU law angle. The skill of spotting these connections is what sets apart exceptional legal professionals.

Eun-ji Choi: Approach it with curiosity. Yes, it's complex, but it's also a fascinating study of how legal systems evolve and interact. The skills you develop in this unit - analytical thinking, understanding legal hierarchies, interpreting treaties - these are transferable to any area of law.
